Ⅰ. Supply the missing conclusion. (20%)

Directions: Study the following passage carefully and write a conclusion in no more than 100 words. Make sure that the tone and vocabulary you use are in unity with the passage provided.

Owning a Car

Should a person own a car? This is an important question.

In a large urban area, there are some good reasons for owning a car. First, a car allows a person to move around freely. With a car, there is no need to check a bus schedule or wait for a train. Second, a car is a comfortable way to travel, especially in the wintertime. In bad weather, the driver stays warm and dry, while the poor bus or train rider might have to stand in the rain. Finally, a driver is usually safe in a car at night. The driver might need to walk down a dark street to get to a stop, or wait on a dark corner.

There are, on the other hand, many good reasons against owning a car. First, it can be very expensive. The price of fuel continues to rise and car insurance can cost three or four hundred dollars a year. In addition, it is expensive to maintain and repair a car. A simple tune-up can cost $ 50. In an urban area, it might also be expensive to park the car. Second, owning a car causes worry and stress. It is exhausting to drive in rush-hour traffic, or to drive around and around looking for a parking space. If you leave your car on the street, it might get stolen. That is something else to worry about. Finally, everyone needs to think about pollution and energy problems. Air pollution and noise pollution increase as more and more people drive cars. More and more cars also burn more and more fuel. At present, drivers may have to wait in long lines at filling stations in order to buy a couple of gallons of gasoline.

Ⅱ. Write an outline. (20%)

Directions: Read the following passage carefully and try to compose an outline for the passage provided.

Mentoring

Mentoring is a relationship between a caring, experienced individual and younger person who could benefit from attention, guidance and support. It’s an idea that has existed, formally and informally, since the beginning of time. All of us who are successful can think back and remember those people in our town or extended family, as well as in the community, at work, or in our churches and synagogues, who have been there for us. They were mentors.

Some young people seek out mentors on their own—people who spend time with them and become positive role models in their lives. We call this informal mentoring.

For others, the opportunity is not available unless a deliberate match of youth and mentor is made, usually by a professional. A relationship then develops based on trust and confidence. Over the past three decades, many different kinds of formal mentoring initiatives have merged in cities and towns across America.

In order for a program to be successful, I recommend that it meet national quality assurance standards, which include a number of elements—most critically, the proper recruitment and screening of mentors and adequate training and on-going support for the mentors and mentees.

You can get involved in any number of programs, which are probably available in your community. One type of program is community-based. That means the location of the mentoring activity is at the discretion of the mentor and youth. For example, they might go together to a museum or zoo for several hours on a Saturday.

And one of the most popular forms of mentoring today is site-based mentoring. The activities occur at a designated site and are supervised and monitored by professionals. Examples of this include mentoring that takes place at the workplace, or at an agency such as a YMCA or a Boys & Girls Club. Other mentoring programs meet in churches or synagogues and prisons or youth shelters. The fastest growing and most popular mentoring programs in this country today take place at schools.

Ⅲ. Composition (60%)

Directions: You are to write a composition of about 300 words on the following topic.

There are two popular modes of traveling. One is to join the package tour, the other is to travel individually. Which one do you prefer? Give reasons to illustrate your choice.
